Bholenath is another name for Lord Shiva and why his devotees call him that is a mystery to most people. While ‘Bhole’ means child, ‘Nath’ means refugees. Let’s understand the true meaning of this name. ‘Bhole’ is a term we generally use to describe as innocent while ‘Nath’ means king. Therefore, Bholenath means the king of innocence. How would we know if this is true?
Why would Lord Shiva, the God of Destruction be called Bholenath?
At first sight, Lord Shiva looks like a great tapasvi which he is. But what one wonders is why call Lord Shiva Bholenath. This is because nothing in the world is as innocent as him. Believe it or not, Lord Shiva is a lord with no sense of malice, cunningness, ego, power, or arrogance. This is what makes him Bholenath.
धन्य धन्य भोलानाथ तुम्हारी, कोडी नही खजाने में,
तीन लोक बसती में बसा कर, आप रहे बीराने में।
What is the story behind Mahadev being called Bholenath?
So the story goes, there was a Demon who prayed for thousands of years. He did intense penance and kept chanting Lord Shiva’s name. Lord Shiva knew that he was a demon and yet he still appeared before him, knowing that he was up to no good. He asked the Demon to pray for any boon and promised that he would be rewarded.
This led the demon, “bhasmaSura” to ask Lord Shiva to allow him to have the power to touch things and burn them to ashes. Lord Shiva, without batting an eyelid, granted the boon to BhasmaSura. Now since the demon was in the Himalayan region where there was only snow, he wanted to test the effects of his boon and knew that if he burnt shiva to ashes there’d be none superior left to defeat. So, he told shiva that he wanted to test it on Shiva himself.
ना पूछो मुझसे मेरी पहचान, मैं तो भस्मधारी हूँ,
भस्म से होता जिनका श्रृंगार, मैं उस भोलेनाथ का पुजारी हूँ।

Now, this was something that Lord Shiva could not have allowed because he couldn’t let himself die as that would bring an end to the world. So, while Lord Shiva runs away, Lord Vishnu appears in a disguise of a beautiful woman called “mohini”. He dances in front of the demon and tricks him into touching his own head, bringing an end to his tyranny.
So, this is why lord shiva is called Bholenath. He is supposed to be the easiest to beget boons from amongst the gods and is also the most gracious. He is the easiest to pacify and yet all this is just once facet of the lord Shiva.
कैसे कह दूँ कि मेरी हर दुआ बेअसर हो गयी,
मैं जब जब भी रोया, मेरे भोलेनाथ को खबर हो गयी।
